The megacity Rises to Toxic Pollution After Celebrations

As Tuesday dawned residents of this heavily contaminated metropolis found themselves exposed to extremely polluted air that registered in the "alarming" level.

Record-Breaking Pollution Measurements

Multiple areas of the capital recorded an air quality index exceeding 500, which translates to 10x the healthy limit recommended by the World Health Organization.

In some locations, concentrations of dangerous airborne particles reached peaks of eighteen hundred, equating to 15 to 20 times higher than healthy levels.

Fireworks Restrictions and Current Developments

Since 2020, the government had enforced a comprehensive restriction on the distribution and bursting of pyrotechnics during Diwali due to their significant contribution to the hazardous smog that covers the capital as the cold season approaches.

Nevertheless earlier this year, the recently formed regional administration appealed to the judicial authority to request a relaxation of the restrictions.

They proposed allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – which have been criticized by environmental experts as being only about 30% reduced emissions – as a compromise between "tradition and environment".

Court Decision and Enforcement

Despite concerns of environmental and health activists, judicial authorities complied with the appeal, mandating that environmentally conscious fireworks could be ignited during specific time windows throughout the festival.

Throughout the festival evening, there was widespread disregard of the regulated periods across the metropolis, with insufficient regulation regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the supposedly greener variety.

Many monitoring devices throughout Delhi showed air quality reaching highest levels around midnight to some of the worst readings observed during the festival in at least recent memory.

Regional Implications

The proliferation of fireworks during Diwali also triggered a controversy with adjacent Pakistan, with authorities in Pakistan's Punjab province partially attributing worsening atmospheric conditions in the city of Lahore on hazardous particles traveling from across the border following the celebrations.

Long-Standing Pollution Crisis

The dangerously high levels of pollution in Delhi have continued as a serious issue for fifteen-plus years, with the problem gradually deteriorating.

Near the festival period, the amount of hazardous airborne contaminants in the environment has been found to spike to seventy percent above the worst records ever documented in the Chinese city, which was previously viewed as the world's most polluted metropolis.

Various Contamination Sources

This crisis in Delhi is resulting from a convergence of various sources including automobile exhaust, dust, construction activities, garbage fires and haze from crop residue ignition in adjacent regions of Punjab and Haryana.

In these regions, agricultural workers illegally ignite agricultural waste to expedite field preparation, producing hazardous smog that then gets trapped over the capital as cooler air sets in.

Medical and Economic Toll

Public health and economic impact on the approximately 33 million inhabitants calling home the Delhi area is significant, according to various research.

The contaminated air causes high levels of nervous system, heart and circulatory and lung diseases, and can even lead to oncological diseases.

Environmental contamination is projected to be accounting for ten thousand early mortalities annually in the city.
