Qatar Sprint Race and Grand Prix Grid Setting: Real-Time Updates

Preamble

Our correspondent will be here shortly to take you through this day's sprint race (2pm GMT) and grid-setting session (18:00 GMT).

Current Events

Formation Lap Time

The formation lap has started.

Circuit Details

There are 19 laps around the lengthiest track in Formula One, the commentator reminds us.

Countdown

The countdown has begun.

Racer Positions

An advantage in Verstappen's favour: his fellow driver Yuki Tsunoda is in front of him by a single position. He is unlikely to mess with the team's lead driver.

Media Conversations

Sky speaking with Sky currently: the analyst is at the Mercedes team.

The analyst is jumping ahead to 2026, interviewing the engineer about his promotion to the team lead role.

Grid Details

Just 16 cars on the grid. It was another bad qualifying for the driver: following his result of 20th and last in the previous race, resulting in an eighth position in the main race, he failed to make it out of Q1 again on Friday. The team have consequently adjusted to his setup and so he begins from the starting area.

Aston Martin's Lance Stroll and the Alpine duo of Pierre Gasly and Colapinto are all doing likewise.

Racer Statements

"We'll use the experience for tomorrow," states Isack Hadjar, starting eleventh. There will be a lot of that.

Team Standings

It's not all about the drivers' title: The team have run away with the constructors' gong but the team, with a forty-point advantage over Red Bull, are aiming to seal second place during this event. Russell can help them achieve that from second place, and Antonelli will begin immediately after Verstappen.

Past Performance

Piastri was victorious then – as he did last year, as well. The driver from McLaren is attempting a third consecutive win.

Sprint Race Value

Alright, approximately twenty minutes remaining till the short race gets under way. Unless something goes wrong, its main importance is as an indication of future events, rather than highly important in its own right, with only eight points available to the winner. Mind you, the runner-up spot here was sufficient for Verstappen to claim the title in a prior season.

The driver wins F1 world title following PΓ©rez crashes out of Qatar GP sprint race.
